Most Expensive Car In The World

For the most recent years, when it comes to the most expensive car in the world, many would unanimously reckon that it’s the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Well, it’s not too difficult to see why most people would think that. With a price tag of an estimated US$2.7mil, it’s no doubt one of the most expensive cars in the world ever produced. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport with a top speed of 431.07 km/h (267.85 mph), is also presently the fastest car in the world.

Most Expensive Car In The World – It’s Not What You Think

However, if you think the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the answer, well, not quite. the current most expensive, costliest car in the world, is indeed a Bugatti, but not a Bugatti Veyron. Its price is about 20 times more than that of the Veyron. It’s not the fastest car in the world, but perhaps it was the fastest back in 1936. It has a 200 bhp engine, and a top speed of 123 mph (200 kph). Many believe that it’s the ultimate Bugatti and the first supercar ever made. It could be the grandfather to all supercars for that matter.

Motor Trend senior editor Jonny Lieberman visits the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California for a firsthand look at The World’s Most Expensive Car – 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic

Alright, I’m sure by now you would’ve guessed that it’s a classic automobile. Well, you’re absolutely right. The honor of Most Expensive Car In The World 2011 is the “1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic”.  It was sold by the estate of the late Dr. Peter D. Williamson (a noted neurologist and well-known car collector), to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California (a collection created by a wealthy executive remuneration expert, Peter Mullin), for a sum of $30 to $40 million. This makes it the most expensive car ever sold in a public sale. The previous record was held by a “1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa”, which was sold in Maranello, Italy, in May 2009 for $12.2 million.

The auction was conducted by a Santa Monica auction house, Gooding & Company. David Gooding, president and founder of the auction house, referred to the Atlantic as “one of the world’s most significant and valuable automobiles that has been in a private collection and rarely seen during the past four decades”.

According to the official press release from Gooding, the Atlantic was an automobile derived from Bugatti’s prototype Aerolithe Electron Coupé, which caused a lot of sensation when it was first unveiled at the Paris Auto Salon in 1935. Bugatti later built only just three Atlantics, each one different from the next. This Williamson Atlantic 1936 car (chassis #57374) is the first in the series and therefore its historical significance, originality and restoration has been revered by enthusiasts throughout the world.

Conclusion

The 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful, bizarre and elusive automobiles ever created. It is thus also regarded as the most desirable classic automobile in the world. Only 4 Atlantics were ever manufactured, and out of these 4, only 2 are still around today. One is owned by the renowned fashion designer Ralph Lauren, while another was owned by the late Dr. Peter Williamson, which was auctioned off recently as 2011. Of the four Type 57SC Atlantics, the Williamson Atlantic is said to be the most original and true-to-form. Due to the rarity and exquisiteness of this Williamson Atlantic, it truly deserves the title of “most expensive car in the world.”
